Assault reported at Kingsport school's Christmas pageant

Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office

Dec. 5

A deputy on the Buff City Highway spotted a car swerve over the double yellow line on two occasions. During a subsequent stop, the 19-year-old driver admitted he had been texting while behind the wheel. In a compartment of the vehicle, police observed marijuana in plain sight, then conducted a search. It uncovered baggies, multiple scales and nearly four ounces of pot. The driver was arrested on several drug charges.

Dec. 6

Police were called to a Highway 394 gas station due to a woman asleep in her car “for several hours.” An officer reports that after “numerous attempts,” she was finally awakened, but thought she was at her job in Johnson City. She performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was arrested for DUI.

Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office

Dec. 1

A man reported an assault at a business in Phipps Bend Industrial Park. During a staff meeting, according to his account, he had fallen asleep, at which time a woman “hit him on the back open handed.” Police took no action.

Kingsport Police Department

Dec. 5

When employees of a bank noticed a small black box lying beside the ATM, they called police to report a suspicious package. A responding officer found it to be empty, then threw it in a trash can.

Dec. 6

Police responded to a disturbance at Lincoln Elementary, where a Christmas pageant was being held by first- and second-graders. A woman, 36, claimed that a child accidentally bumped into her daughter, so she told the other juvenile she should say, “Excuse me.” An altercation ensued, then escalated to a 20-year-old man allegedly pushing her. The woman reportedly fell backward and hit her back on a set of stairs but declined medical attention. An officer advised how she could privately pursue an assault charge. She advised she would do so.
